SILVER TASSIE - WM ROGERS SILVER TEA SET.
Silver Tassie
- (Sean O'Casey) Aldwych, 1969
- The Silver Tassie is an opera in four acts by the English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The English libretto was written by Amanda Holden based on the 1927 play of the same name by Sean O'Casey. The opera was composed between 1997 and 1999.
Book: The Silver Tassie
The Silver Tassie was Sean O’Casey’s fourth play and was basically an attack on imperialist wars. In 1928 he submitted it to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, whose director, WB Yeats, rejected it because it ‘wasn’t suitable’. O'Casey was deeply offended, not least because a couple of his earlier plays – in particular Juno and the Paycock – had saved the Abbey from bankruptcy. As a result of this rejection, O’Casey declared literary war on Yeats and moved to England, where he spent the rest of his life.
This is a rare 1928 first edition of the play, with torn page edges, published by Macmillan and Co Limited, St Martin’s Street, London, and printed by R&R Clark Limited of Edinburgh. It’s dedicated ‘to Eileen with the daffodils in the green vase’. This was Eileen Reynolds, a young actress who later became O’Casey’s wife – and according to her obituary in The Times, theirs was ‘one of the most contented home lives in literary history'.
